lyrics

The day my father died, I played a show
My sister told me after my previous project had gotten off stage
She told me in a crying whisper while hugging me tightly
"Dad died" she said and I wept into her arms
It was all she said and we wept together on the dance floor
Later in the greenroom she told me that he'd passed after a prayer
The few people he had left in his life were surrounding him
They all prayed that he go peacefully and off he went
So off I went like a baby into a dream
I saw the black balloons waft around the greenroom as my sister and I parted ways

Black balloons are taking us there

My grandfather died four years later
I went to rehearsal that night to try to dance out some demons and pay my respects
My grief sang from my Gretsch and my whammy bar made me sob
The band was there as I wailed upon the hardwood floor
You see, we had just pulled the plug two days prior as per his wishes
His whiskey habit had gotten the best of him and old age and sorrow, of course
My aunts, my wife, Christina, my mother, her husband, Steve, my sister, my brother, his children and Ma
Uncle Johnny and Kari and Tim gathered around the geurney as we wept upon the 7th floor
And we sang songs together to soothe the passing of life
I took a phonecall - it was business - The Young Psychedelics
It was Mike, owns a studio up in Sanford - nice guy
I've been thinkin' about buying property up there
Preferably something turn of the century with enough space to build my own studio one day -
And a big backyard for your son, Jude

Black balloons are taking us there
